Professional Development

The Faculty Digital Learning Team aim's to deliver a professional learning program to Curtin staff, designed to promote good learning and teaching practices and support the adoption of new technologies within the Faculty. The program is open to all staff engaged in the delivery of courses and units including Unit Coordinators, Lecturers, Tutors and Teaching Support. There are two types of program – stand alone (1.5 hour sessions) and series (4 x 2 hour sessions).

Stand Alone Sessions

Blackboard (Bb) Makeover

  • Review the attributes of a Blackboard unit that will help to foster excellence in learning and teaching practice.
  • Design a Blackboard unit that will address your needs and improve student satisfaction.

Feedback Strategies

  • Discuss and reflect on the intention of offering feedback and its impact on learning.
  • Identify common factors affecting the effectiveness of feedback.
  • Understand the relationship between learning design and feedback strategies.
  • Share and generate ideas on managing feedback turnaround time.
  • Consider how technology can be utilised in the feedback process.

Marking and Moderation

  • Implement the Curtin Assessment Model with a good understanding of the stages.
  • Compare the characteristics of three common types of marking rubrics.
  • Discuss how to identify and design an appropriate marking rubric.
  • Share good moderation practices.

Unit Outline Workshop

  • Resolving issues that staff have in the Unit Outline Builder.

Digital Tools and Strategies

This workshop will focus on a selection of simple and basic tools available at Curtin, and discuss their educational alignment and practical applications – both in face to face and online classes.

Getting Started

  • Address the purpose for using Turnitin.
  • Learn how to create and manage Turnitin Assignments in Blackboard.
  • Review and interpret the Turnitin Originality report.
  • Understand how creating Turnitin assignment links will imact on Grade Centre.

Marking Strategies using Feedback Studio

  • Marking procedure in Grade Centre.
  • Marking procedure in Turnitin Feedback Studio.
  • Understanding how a student reviews their feedback.

Interpreting Turnitin Score

When is a score an automatic academic integrity issue? It’s not as simple as a certain score equalling evidence of academic misconduct. Come along to this session to learn how to interpret the score, unpacking what the score might means in terms of academic misconduct and equipping yourself with a greater understanding around how to use Originality Reports.

Visual Plagiarism

This session will explore the concept of ‘visual plagiarism’ and the online tools available to assist in the identification of academic misconduct associated with visual submissions.

Transforming Teaching Series

We hear a lot about changing our teaching, doing more online, and doing it better, using data to inform improvements and changes to our practice and unit design. But… what does that mean, what does it look like, and how do we do it?

Our series approach is designed to help you move from conceptual to practical understanding and action via four stages;

  1. A colloquium – join a facilitated, collegial conversation to talk out the big topics each
  2. A seminar – explore the concepts in an active learning lecture style
  3. A workshop – hands on examination of the contexts in a practical learning session
  4. Ad hoc “Coach me!” catchups – bespoke small group sessions to work with you to design and prepare change to your own teaching / unit [as you need]

The series topics this semester are:

  1. Blended learning: Have you wondered exactly what is meant by ‘blended learning’?
    Or do you kind of have an idea, but not sure how tobest go about it yourself? Or maybe you are interested in fresh ideas orhave great ideas to share!
  2. Learning analytics
    Learning analytics involve the use of data to informand improve learning experiences, but is often used in whole-of university contexts. Did you know that you can get all kinds of data at all kinds ofmoments in and across semesters? And that you can use this data to make immediate improvements to a learner’s experiences or generalimprovements over time?
  3. Same-ifying the learning experience across online and internal units
    We hear that we must make the learning experiences of our internal andonline students equitable. This series examines how we can do this, giventhe very different environments experienced by students in fully online andinternal unit enrolments.
